Detergents, shampoos, deodorants, cleaners, cosmetics. What's actually in them, what the packaging claims, and whether either just changed.

The claim we check first

"Unscented" is not the same as fragrance-free. Products are routinely given a masking fragrance to cover the smell of the base ingredients, then marketed as unscented. It's legal, it's common, and it's how a lot of people in this community get hurt.

It's also mechanically detectable. If the packaging claims fragrance-free or unscented and the ingredient list contains a fragrance ingredient, that's a conflict — and we flag it on the strength of the label alone. No reports required.

Why this matters more than a rating

A conflict is checkable. You can hold the bottle, read position 5 of the ingredient list, and confirm we're right. That's a claim we can defend to the manufacturer, and a claim you don't have to take on trust.

Reformulation alerts

This is the part we most want to get right.

Products change. A formula you've relied on for years gets reworked, the packaging barely moves, and there's no notice — you find out by reacting to it in your own home.

We keep every version of every ingredient list we've seen, with the date we saw it. When a new list doesn't match the one on file, that's a reformulation event. If the product is on your watchlist, you hear about it.

  1. Someone scans the label

    A member photographs the ingredient list. The app reads it on-device.

  2. It doesn't match what we have

    The new list is compared against the version on file. A difference flags a candidate reformulation.

  3. It gets verified

    Photographs of curved bottles in bad light are unreliable. Candidates are confirmed before they're published.

  4. Watchers are told

    Anyone with that product saved gets an alert, with the old and new lists side by side.

Old reports don't carry over

When a formula changes, reports about the previous version aren't averaged in or quietly aged out — they're separated. They describe a different recipe that happens to share a barcode. Showing them as current would be worse than showing nothing.

What we can and can't tell you

Every finding is a boolean test with the ingredient cited. Where the label doesn't support a conclusion, we say so rather than guessing — see how it works for the full logic.

In particular: if the list contains Parfum, Fragrance, Aroma or similar, we cannot tell you what the product is free of. That's not us being cautious. It's genuinely not knowable from the label.

Where the data comes from

  • Open ingredient databases — public, barcode-indexed product data, with the source recorded on every entry.
  • Members — photographs of ingredient lists, which is also how we catch reformulations.
  • Manufacturers — brands can supply and verify their own lists. Anything they give us is labeled as coming from them.

Every ingredient list carries its source and the date it was observed, because a finding is only meaningful relative to the label that produced it.
